Ana Maria’s unique designs have refined and improved the art of Pietre Dure Mosaic Stone Art Pictures that existed since at least Roman times. This Pietre Dure Art which means ‘Hard Stone’ and is sometimes also known as Florentine Mosaic Art consists of beautiful and intricate pictures made from carved and polished pieces of naturally colored gemstone material. Like a painting, it uses form and color from an artist’s eye. However, it also involves patient carving and polishing techniques to bring out the best in color and detail beauty of the natural gemstones. Ana cannot ’mix’ her colors as an artist does; she must find the correct stone that has been ‘mixed’ by nature and represents the color effect that she wants. Her pallet is a collection of 3/16 to 1/4 inch thick gemstone material. Ana’s work will last forever as her canvas and paint are all natural stone or mirror. Particularly striking are her stone on mirror pictures which truly give meaning to the phrase ‘nothing lasts forever, but the earth and sky’. The gemstone image represents earth mounted on the mirror background which represents the eternal sky. Ana’s inspiration comes from many of the native birds and animals of the southern Utah mountains and deserts. She also enjoys doing native American southwestern art themes. Ana mosaic art is available online and at several locations in South Central Utah including the Staples Art Center in Elsinore. It is also available at the Trading Post, The Wooden Nickel, and the Craft Coop in Marysvale. Ana can be commissioned to do Pietre Dure Portraits to your specifications. |
